While this critic is referring to a double standard in terms of whose books are fair game for no-holds-barred negative reviews (the tanks) and whose are not (the pedestrians), reviewers’ different treatment of higher- and lower-status writers is not just attributable to a difference of success. It is also a commentary on the skewed reward system in publishing and how different people face different odds and vulnerabilities as a result.

“Pedestrian[s]” and “armored tanks” are metaphors for the different circumstances faced by authors in the “superstar structure” of the publishing field.7 But beyond the fact that some authors are more or less successful than others, in the next section we see how punching up is understood as a critique of, if not a corrective to, the process by which such success and status are maintained.
